Step 40
We never really inhabit a city: we end up settling for a jigsaw image made of the few tiny fragments of neighbourhoods we have visited, and those scraps come to stand in for the landscape — while every corner we haven't seen harbours countless rifts and openings onto elsewhere. Going out, slowing down with a camera, looking for a frame worth the name, can reopen the mind to the idea of an ineradicable otherness inhabiting what we think we know, especially at the tail end of the monsoon, "when the low, heavy sky weighs like a lid"...
It was Thierry R.'s idea; we had already gone out shooting together in Chinatown. Sathorn Unique's supposed watchman had deftly turned the ban into an "entrance fee" (200 baht apiece for farangs, 100 if you're Thai) — and word had got around. The site's tangled history is summed up in a separate document. In October 2014, the man we see here "capturing" the impassive Chao Phraya may well be the chef-photographer — the one who, two months later, would discover a man hanged three floors above. It would take weeks to visit every room, the building forming one immense partitioned desert across nearly fifty storeys; it took one curious visitor stumbling on precisely that room for the man to be found — the man who had sought to disappear all the way into his own disappearance. Don't jump, someone wrote on the left-hand pillar; it's the "outside" that's meant — the suicide took the great leap at the very bottom of the inside.
On the Chao Phraya, in the milky monsoon light, the procession of barges laden with sand and cement goes on.
