The Reward
He must have been doing rather well for himself, the sham guard: there were quite a few of us (the same day as in the previous photograph) panting up the dusty stairs, stepping over abandoned sacks and rubble all the way to the 40th floor, crossing from one stairwell to another, without quite knowing why, through this floor rather than that — at times darkened by the giant advertisements draped along the façade. Instinct forces you to strike a balance between fatigue and curiosity, both mingled with the urge to reach the top while it's still light: going up is all very well, but there's also the climb back down to Charoen Krung to think about. Conditions are favourable; a couple sits down on the still-bare concrete. The higher you climb, the more it's covered with the graffiti of all those who want to leave some mark of their exploits for those who come next. A little less so along the edges.
Four hundred and ninety metres away as the crow flies, people pay a small fortune to look at Bangkok, cocktail in hand, from the rooftop of the twin tower — the one that made it, the one you see in the films. Nothing to order here, nothing to lean your elbows on, no bag search at the entrance. What's left is a little room for your backside, between the rebar and the city that begins in the void where your feet dangle.
