Dad’s Workshop
2021. J'avais d'abord mis « Daddies never give up » quand j'ai publié cette photo sur Flickr. Dans les recoins de cet atelier, on râclait du salpêtre qu'on s'amusait ensuite à jeter dans le feu, pendant que papa bataillait avec une planche à retailler ou une charnière rouillée. C'était l'étau qui me fascinait le plus. De quand date-t-il ? Beaucoup d'outils sont toujours les mêmes que ceux du temps de l'arrière-grand-père et sont aujourd'hui dans les mains de mon grand frère aîné, après être passés par tant d'autres mains, y compris les miennes (et même si mes frères se moquent encore ouvertement du caractère systématiquement foireux de mes tentatives de bricolage). L'arrière-grand-père a été du mauvais côté de l'histoire alors qu'il faisait partie des pionniers dans les constructions de voitures. Mais les outils, ça n'a pas de mémoire politique, et ça sert à construire, tout le temps, par tous les temps.
2021. My first caption when I posted this photo on Flickr was "Daddies never give up." In the corners of this workshop, we would scrape saltpetre and toss it into the fire for fun, while Dad wrestled with a board to be trimmed or a rusty hinge. It was the vice that fascinated me most. How old is it? Many of the tools are the same ones that belonged to my great-grandfather's time, and today they are in the hands of my eldest brother, having passed through so many other hands — including mine (even if my brothers still openly mock the reliably disastrous results of my attempts at DIY). My great-grandfather ended up on the wrong side of history, despite being one of the pioneers of automobile construction. But tools have no political memory, and they are made for building — always, in all weathers.
